HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a true medical Emergency that can lead to death.

With urgent medical care to restart the heart, survival is possible.


Quick decision making is required to recognise and assess a cardiac emergency, call for medical assistance and perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to increase the chance of survival for a person who is unconscious and not breathing normally.


During our CPR course, you will learn these skills, in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, including using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), how to rotate first aiders with minimal interruptions to compressions, and what to do if the casualty regurgitates or vomits.


The course also covers conveying accurate incident details  when handing the casualty over to emergency services, how to review an incident,  recognising any psychological impacts on self and other rescuers, and how to seek help if required.

Course Duration

 Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum time;

  • Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 1 Hour 30 Mins
  • Blended Face to Face contact time of at least 1 Hour 30 Mins
  • Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 2 Hours
  • Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 20 Mins 

Entry Requirements

  • Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations such as     2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and rescue breathing techniques on manikins 
  • Pre-course study: Students may be required to undertake online pre-course work prior to attending the face to face session depending on the course delivery mode. 
  • Online study: Students require access to a computer, smartphone or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete online/ pre-course studies.

Certificate Renewal Requirements

Certificates will require renewal after 12 months 

Assessment Requirements

Students will be required to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. 

Assessment Activities

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
  • Perform CPR on an infant

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

This course includes HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

With instruction and practical training in line with legal, workplace and community considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies, this first aid course teaches the skills and knowledge to recognise emergencies and provide immediate and effective first aid treatment to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury. 


The course covers assessing the casualty, providing safety, accessing emergency services, and using resources to provide first aid, such as providing CPR and using a defibrillator, administering an autoinjector for anaphylaxis, administering asthma medication, assisting someone choking, using appropriate immobilisation techniques for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, managing casualties with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock.


You will learn basic anatomy, physiology and the differences between adults, children and infants relating to CPR, the importance of the chain of survival, written and verbal reporting of incident details, reviewing incidents to improve own skills and response times, to recognise psychological impacts, and seeking help as required.

The following units will be included in your certificate:

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support

  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed

  • Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
  • Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education & Care Setting

This course includes HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

This course provides practical training for workers within an education and care setting to respond to first aid emergencies in line with legal and workplace requirements, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.


It teaches how to identify illness or injury, access emergency services, safely provide first aid treatment using action plans, equipment and resources, for CPR, defibrillation, administering an autoinjector for anaphylaxis, administering asthma medication, immobilisation for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, for bleeding and shock and other conditions.


You will learn basic anatomy, physiology and the differences between adults, children and infants relating to CPR, managing an infant or child with an acute illness, or who requires an immediate ambulance response and conveying incident details to parents, caregivers and emergency services.


The course covers completing incident documentation and debriefing for improvement of response, recognising psychological impacts, talking with children about their emotions and seeking help as required.

Units Delivered

The following units will be included in your certificate:

  • HLTAID012 - Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
  • HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
