HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education & Care Setting

Course Description

This course provides practical training for workers within an education and care setting to respond to first aid emergencies in line with legal and workplace requirements, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.


It teaches how to identify illness or injury, access emergency services, safely provide first aid treatment using action plans, equipment and resources, for CPR, defibrillation, administering an autoinjector for anaphylaxis, administering asthma medication, immobilisation for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, for bleeding and shock and other conditions.


You will learn basic anatomy, physiology and the differences between adults, children and infants relating to CPR, managing an infant or child with an acute illness, or who requires an immediate ambulance response and conveying incident details to parents, caregivers and emergency services.


The course covers completing incident documentation and debriefing for improvement of response, recognising psychological impacts, talking with children about their emotions and seeking help as required.

Course Duration

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum times;

  • Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 7 Hours
  • Blended Face to Face contact time of at least 7 Hours
  • Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 9 Hours
  • Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 1 Hour

Entry Requirements

  • Students must have a valid USI (Unique Student Identifier) – create one or check for an existing one by clicking here  https://www.usi.gov.au/
  • Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations such as     2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and rescue breathing techniques on manikins. 
  • Pre-course study: Students may be required to undertake online pre-course work prior to attending the face to face session depending on the course delivery mode. 
  • Online study:  Students require access to a computer, smartphone, or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.

Certificate Renewal Requirements

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting has an industry recommended renewal period of 36 months. 

HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation will require renewal after 12 months.

Assessment Requirements

Students will be required to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. 

Assessment Activities

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position) - 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor
  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario
  • Perform CPR on an infant - 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR
  •  Perform CPR on a child - 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR
  • Manage a child casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a child casualty with asthma
  • Manage a choking child and infant casualty
  • Manage a child casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning
  • Manage a child casualty with a nosebleed
  • Manage a child casualty with a fracture and dislocation
  • Manage a child casualty with a sprain and strain
  • Manage a child casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.

CHCPRT025 Identify & report children & young people at risk

Course Description

This unit is an approved child protection training course required by government protocol and applies to workers in a range of job roles providing services to children and young people in childcare, education, community services and health contexts.


It is designed to build awareness and provide the education required to identify, respond, support and protect children and young people who are at risk of harm. It provides participants with an awareness of child abuse and neglect including the indicators of the different types and dynamics of abuse as they may apply to age, gender, disability, culture and sexuality.


Completing this course, students will understand the wider context of child protection within the framework of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Federal and state/territory legal requirements as well as the ethical considerations and duty of care responsibilities.


You have a maximum of (6) six months to complete the unit.

No industry recommended renewal is identified on the certificate, employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods. 

Assessment Requirements

  • Access to a smart phone, computer and a reliable internet connection.
  • To complete the practical assessment (online), you will require the resources and equipment to physically complete a practical task following clear instructions and assessment guidelines.
  •  A student would typically video themselves using their smart phone (or be recorded by a second person) undertaking the two (2) practical assessment tasks and upload the two (2) videos.
  • Videos must be of good quality and clearly demonstrate the tasks being undertaken. A qualified assessor will view the video recordings against the benchmark criteria and mark the uploaded practical assessment videos. 
  • All assessment criteria must be met to achieve competency.
  • Students are required to upload two (2) videos of themselves participating in simulated scenarios to complete the practical assessment component.

Child at Risk - Refresher Non-Accredited

Course Description

This is a non-accredited course for those who have previously undertaken similar training and would like to refresh and update their skills. This course is also applicable to those who are not required to undertake nationally recognised training but are required to be aware of the indicators of abuse or neglect and how to respond.

Annual Compliance Requirements

Refresher training is recommended to demonstrate compliance with Regulation 84 of the Education and Care Services National Law and Education and Care Services National Regulations and Quality Area 2 of the National Quality Standard. Refresher training is designed to assist the participant in demonstrating up-to-date knowledge of the laws and their obligations to meet the requirements of Regulation 84.


Regulation 84 Awareness of child protection law states “The approved provider of an education and care service must ensure that nominated supervisors and staff members at the service who work with children are advised of—

  1. (a) the existence and application of the current child protection law; and
  2. (b) any obligations that they may have under that law.”


If you are a designated Mandatory Reporter, you are required by law to report suspected child abuse and neglect to government authorities. Are you confident in identifying the indicators of abuse and neglect and how to report these concerns?

Course Content

This non-accredited course has been designed in consultation with trainers with extensive experience in both day care and school environments across multiple jurisdictions. This unit will provide you with the skills and knowledge to support and protect children and young people who are at risk of harm.


Working within the legislative and policy frameworks, you will:

  • Understand the indicators of the different types and dynamics of abuse as they may apply to age, gender, disability, culture, and sexuality
    • Report indications of the possible risk of harm
    • Respond to disclosure and ask open and non-leading questions
    • Be aware of the mandatory reporting requirements in your jurisdiction
    • Know how to document, record, and report risk-of-harm indicators in a non-judgmental manner
    • Implement work practices that support the protection of children and young people
    • Apply ethical and nurturing practices when working with children and young people
    • Be aware of duty of care responsibilities, ethical considerations, mandatory reporting, and confidentiality requirements
